6 Common Mistakes In Moving And How To Avoid Them

Mistake #1: Failing to do Research and Hire a Reputable Moving Company

One type of company that is not lacking in numbers throughout the country is a moving company. Because there are so many, it can be difficult to choose the right one. However, it is an incredibly important task.

Take the time to perform research on several different moving companies. Make sure they’re licensed and insured. Request and actually check their references. Once you have found a few reputable moving companies, you can then choose the one that best fits your budget and individual situation.

Mistake #2: Forgetting to De-Clutter Before Packing

A common moving mistake people make is packing up everything from their current home. This is bad in two different ways. First, it will add to the moving costs that you will be paying, and second, it requires you to pack and unpack many items that are not necessary for the new home.

The best thing you can do is take the time to sort your items as you are packing when moving. Create piles of items you will donate, recycle, and throw away. Avoid holding onto items that you haven’t used in over a year. In the end, the less you have to move, the better off you will be.

Mistake #3: Not Properly Labeling Your Boxes

One of the easiest ways to stay organized while moving is to label your moving boxes. Unfortunately, this is a simple task that tends to be overlooked.

To make it easier to unpack your boxes when you arrive at the new location, create a labeling system that will let you know what types of items are in each box and what room they belong in. Don’t forget to also create a box with the essentials so you don’t have to unpack them immediately.

Mistake #4: Not Getting Moving Insurance to Protect Your Valuables

Often overlooked, moving insurance comes in many different forms and coverage levels. Although the chance the insurance will be needed is minimal, assuming you’re working with a solid moving company, you have to decide whether you want to take that risk or not. Without insurance, you are likely to have little to no recourse in the event of a mishap.

With that being said, make sure to research the different coverage options for moving insurance. Don’t forget to check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if moving insurance is included, as it may be with some policies.

Mistake #5: Stalling to Ask for Help

If you have never moved before, it can be easy to underestimate the difficulty of the move. Moving is a very time- and labor-intensive process. While a DIY move can be accomplished, many situations call for professional help.

Make sure you’re honest with yourself regarding what kind of time and effort you’ll need to put into the move and whether you have that much to give. If you are moving a large amount of heavy and valuable items, hiring a professional mover may be your best approach. However, if you have a limited amount of items to move, a DIY move can usually be pulled off.

Mistake #6: Not Forwarding Your Mail and Transferring Your Utilities Early Enough!

Transferring your utilities and forwarding your mail is not something that occurs overnight. Depending on the situation, it takes days and possibly even weeks. This common moving mistake can easily be avoided by planning ahead.

Make sure to submit a mail forwarding request several weeks before your moving date. You can indicate the day you would like to start receiving mail at the new address, so it’s never too early to get this in. As far as utilities go, speak to the company as soon as you know your moving date so you can schedule new services. Generally, you want to leave the utilities on at the old house for a few days in case you need them.

While moving can be overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be a complete mess. Steer clear of the aforementioned moving mistakes to help ensure your moving day remains on track.
