How To Load A Moving Truck

Jul 28, 2020

Moving can be an exciting adventure, as it is usually the beginning of a new adventure in one’s life. It can also be a stressful time, as there are many details to take care of, seemingly all at once. One of the more expensive parts of relocating is securing a moving truck, so you will want to effectively utilize the space available in the vehicle as best as possible.

Here are some great tips on the best ways to load your moving truck.

Get Your Packing Supplies Early

In order to load up the truck as efficiently as possible, you will want to get all of your belongings packed up in an orderly fashion. Having the right kind of boxes and supplies will go a long way to accomplish that goal. Get a hold of the following items to make the most out of your packing activities.

  • Sturdy, heavy cardboard boxes and tubs
  • Furniture pads
  • A dolly
  • Commercial packing tape (don’t buy the cheap stuff)
  • Straps
  • Tarps (to cover the truck floor)

Take Apart Furniture To Save Space

Placing assembled furniture into the moving truck can waste a tremendous amount of space. By removing pieces such as legs, drawers and other components, you will be saving a lot of room for other belongings. Be sure to cover everything in bubble wrap or blankets to protect finishes from damage.

Loading Books & Bookcases

It seems only natural that when you move, books should go into boxes for safe transport. However, think of all of the empty space that your bookshelves will be taking up on the loaded truck. By putting your book boxes back on the shelves of the bookcase, you will be taking advantage of all that extra room.

First Things First

When trying to make use of every available inch of space in the moving truck, be sure to load in large, solid objects before anything else. . For example, if you are bringing a refrigerator or a washer/dryer, with you, put those in the truck first. This is a whole lot easier than trying to fit these big appliances around random boxes and other smaller items. The additional benefit of the large things first strategy is that you can put smaller packed goods on top of the fridge or washer, as you continue to load the truck.

Taking Advantage Of Vertical Space

Most people when moving never think about the upper or vertical space that is available on a truck, extending all the way to the vehicle’s roofline. As you load the truck from the back moving forward, be sure to utilize all of the available space above your head. Some moving vans even have shelving or “attic space’ where boxes and other belonging can go. By fully taking advantage of available vertical space, you will be delighted with how much more room you have at your disposal.
